Sub-cultures are a culture within a culture, with some norms and values exclusive to it and distant from those of the majority in a society. Sexuality and gender identity-based cultures exist in our society whether we choose to acknowledge them or not. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people. LGBT is a sub-culture under the parent culture of sexuality and gender-identity-based cultures. This sub-culture does not only involve people in the United States, but in other countries as well. An even more specific target of this sub-culture is the youth.
Youth pride promotes equality amongst young members of the LGBT community. The group focuses on supporting the youth by conducting festivals, parades, and other events to help LGBT youth to communicate with other youth that are facing similar situations. If these young people are not being allowed to be comfortable with themselves they could resort to extreme measure i.e. suicide. Gay and Lesbian sexuality alone face criticism and bullying. The youth of this sub-culture, in my opinion, are confronted with more abuse than most sub-cultures that are not considered “socially acceptable.” These people may face physical or verbal abuse, substance abuse, bullying at school, isolation, and resentment from parents. Online bullying has become the main form of bullying within teens due to the social networks that are available, Twitter and Facebook.
Mainstream is going through the process of being more accepting of LGBT youth. Organizations are made to encourage the youth that they do not have to change themselves to become accepted. In 1995 Massachusetts Governors Commission started a Gay-Straight Youth observance. In 1997 Youth Pride Alliance, non-profit, was founded to create an annual event in Washington D.C. Oprah Winfrey also contributed by providing a display for sexual minority groups through media. There are more acts of influence still being done on mainstream culture thanks to supporters of the youth.
